A total of 104 fish and 24 coral (Scleractinia, Zoanthidea, Corallimorpharia, Milleporina) species were identified in the area of Papeete harbour (Tahiti, French Polynesia). This overall richness is comparable to less-disturbed fringing reefs around high volcanic islands in the Society Archipelago. Human activities reduced species richness slightly in inner areas of the harbor. Two passes, which connect the harbor to the open ocean, renew lagoonal waters in the inner harbor at a rate that appears sufficient to minimize effects of human disturbance.
