DFO Quebec Region Biodiversity of the Planning for Integrated Environmental Response Coastal Survey in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf (2017-2021)

This dataset contains all observations of marine organisms noted during the analysis of 2959 underwater images sampled over a large extent of the coastal zone (≤10 m) of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Quebec region). The dataset includes 21 490 occurrences of 150 taxa and informal categories including macroalgae, invertebrates and fish. Underwater images were collected between 2017 and 2021 according to a directed sampling protocol whose primary goal was to map large seaweed and eelgrass beds. Images were normally recorded as videos using a camera installed on a pole and placed near the seabed from a small boat. The collected data served primarily as ground-truth data to validate coasting zone mapping based on aerial photographs within the framework of the Planning for Integrated Environmental Response initiative (PIER). Ce jeu de données contient toutes les observations d’organismes marins notées lors de l’analyse de 2959 images sous-marines échantillonnées sur une large étendue de la zone côtière (≤10 m) de l’estuaire et du golfe du Saint-Laurent (région du Québec). Le jeu de données comprend 21 490 occurrences de 150 taxons et catégories informelles, incluant des macroalgues, des invertébrés et des poissons. Les images sous-marines ont été recueillies entre 2017 et 2021, selon un protocole d’échantillonnage dirigé dont le but premier était de cartographier les grands bancs d’algues et les zostéraies. Les images étaient normalement enregistrées sous forme de vidéos à l’aide d’une caméra installée sur une perche et placée près du fond marin à partir d’une petite embarcation. Les données collectées ont principalement servi de données de validation pour la cartographie des zones côtières basée sur des photographies aériennes, dans le cadre de l’initiative Planification pour une intervention environnementale intégrée (PIEI).
