Specimens from CSIRO voyages and other voyages or surveys in Australian waters (1974-present)

From 2015, the CSIRO research vessel RV Investigator has been collecting specimens from all seas around Australia and the Southern Ocean, typically using a beam trawl or brenke sled.

Specimens have been lodged and curated in the various Australian collections with the majority in the Australian National Fish Collection, Australian Museum, Western Australian Museum, Museums Victoria, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum. The samples from RV Investigator and earlier CSIRO ships RV Soela, RV Southern Surveyor that have been added to these institutions has resulted in many new taxa being described in part by comparison with specimens acquired from surveys prior to 2015. Each specimen in this dataset has a typestatus of holotype, paratype or blank for 'Other materials examined..'. Each record has the relevant cited science publication where further details can be found.

There is any existing OBIS dataset of type localities dataset covering the whole globe. Unfortunately it misses important collection information of collection date, voucher identifier, acquired depth, voyage or survey name and gear used.

This dataset will continue to grow as new species are described from either new specimens or from the existing curated specimens.

The data has been acquired on the following RV Investigator voyages IN2017_V03, IN2017_V05, IN2018_V06 and IN2022_V09 where there are links to additional metadata, datasets, events, deployments, publications etc.
